World Radio Day is celebrated this Friday under the theme “Radio and Artificial Intelligence”.
This highlights the impact of radio in informing, educating, and connecting people worldwide and focuses on AI as a tool for innovation in broadcasting.
In 2012, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a proclamation to celebrate Radio Day every year as part of paying homage to broadcasters for their daily delivery, the voices they amplify and the stories they share.
The UN agency, UNESCO, has urged broadcasters to adopt clear ethical frameworks for the use of AI, in line with its 2021 recommendation.
South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Group Executive for Radio, Nada Wotshela, says: “Radio in this country is a very, very important medium. Radio has played a critical role in keeping our people informed and educated and entertained. It has given the marginalised and the downtrodden a voice at a time where the apartheid forces were trying to shut them up. People always had an outlet, you know, to ventilate their grievances, and radio has always connected people to the world around them.”
