South Africa’s medalists have arrived back from the World Indoor Championships held in Najing, China.

Up and coming 800 metres athlete, Prudence Sekgodiso, became the first South African woman to get a medal at the championships when she won the women’s 800 metres event.

The 23-year-old Limpopo-born Sekgodiso also reached the final of the 800 metres at the Paris Olympic Games last year.

She says she cannot wait for what lies ahead.

“Now people know me, I am looking forward to the world champs, the Olympics, everything, you know I am on top now.”

South African sprint king, Akani Simbine also arrived back this morning after winning a first individual medal at a major championship after a series of fourth and fifth place finishes.

Simbine, a relative newcomer to indoor athletics, finished third in the men’s 60 metres sprint in Nanjing.

“ I think coming to the indoors, it was trying to figure something out what to work on. My first start and, what can I say, let’s just see what happens, we’ll figure it out round by round, and not have any big expectations because there are people who are specialists in 60 meters, and ja it went well, we ran well I came back with a medal and it’s the first medal individually, which is really great. The one thing everyone has been waiting for but it’s not the thing, it doesn’t describe my career, yes, I have a medal now but there’s still more medals I want to get and achieve. I am looking forward towards the season, it’s a great moral booster for myself, for the team, South Africa believing in us going into the season and going into the world championships.”
