Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane says a lot of work has been done in preparation for the funeral services of the Eastern Cape flood victims.

Simelane is visiting flood ravaged areas to assess government intervention, as well as to ensure support to the affected families.

Ninety people have died and hundreds displaced after floods damaged homes, schools and many other facilities last week.

Simelane says they are meeting with bereaved families to finalise outstanding issues.

“Engagements have started with the bereaved families, we are almost ready as government. Pathologic services are almost done with the necessary work. Bodies have been released to their loved ones. And they are busy with preparations.”

“I think we are left with ten or so paperwork for family members with regard to Home Affairs which also has parked a temporary truck where all the paperwork for children and family members is being done,” adds Simelane.

Meanwhile, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli says two people lost their lives in the Durban area during strong winds which pounded the province last week.

Last Tuesday, gale-force winds caused widespread damage to houses and infrastructure.

At least 400 households have been affected, with close to 50 families left without shelter.

More than 200 schools have also been damaged.

Ntuli, together with other government officials visited one of the affected areas at Impendle near Pietermaritzburg today.

“The unfortunate part is the news what we’ve just received today in the morning, in eThekwini, two lives were lost. The disaster in KZN, because of the strong winds. In fact, it was very impactful in terms of creating unfortunate living condition and working condition in government institutions,” adds Ntuli.
