Woman taxi driver
Some women who work in previously male-dominated industries have encouraged fellow women to pursue careers in industries outside their comfort zones.
SABC News followed a female taxi driver as she loaded passengers at the Polokwane taxi rank and a young aspirant mechanical engineer as she fixed vehicles.
49-year-old Kwena Kutumela has been driving minibus taxis for 12 years. She hails from Mokopane, Kutumela and ferries travellers between Germiston in Gauteng and various destinations in Limpopo.
The mother of two says she ventured into the taxi industry after quitting her job at a funeral parlour.
“There is no job that has been for men, even us as women we can do the same job as men so there is no way that some women can stay at home and say there are no jobs, while that person has a driver’s license and a PDP. My advice to those women out there is that come join us in the taxi industry or in other male dominated industries. Come and join me so that you can see that everything can be fine. Some women may be holding back because of fear, but what I am saying is that women can just stand up and do things for themselves.”
