Witness in Limpopo pig farm murder claims he was tortured by police

Rudolph de Wet, the second accused-turned-state-witness in the double murder trial of Limpopo pig farmer Zacharia Olivier, has told the court he was tortured by police on the day of his arrest.

De Wet testified against Olivier in the High Court in Polokwane.

Olivier is being tried for the double murder of Maria Makgato and Kudzai Ndlovu, and the attempted murder of Mabutho Ncube in August last year.

His co-accused, William Musora, is also facing charges of being in the country illegally and defeating the ends of justice.

De Wet was being cross-examined by the defence lawyer, Advocate Jacobus Venter.

“Mr De Wet, when they put a plastic bag over your head and they put these questions to you, to your mind, I want to get two things. Did you ever fear for your life? And secondly, what were they asking? What were they trying to get from you?” asked Venter.

“Yes, I was fearing for my life because there were several occasions when I was passing out. And then the second question they were asking about was whether we disposed of the weapons and if we are the ones who did it – questions like that,” responded de Wet.
