The Anti-Gang Unit members deployed in the Bishop Lavis policing precinct recovered an explosive device which was found abandoned as well as an assault rifle at an informal settlement close to Valhalla Park.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde says crime statistics in the province show a reduction of 8.7 percent in murder.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu released the quarterly stats in Johannesburg yesterday.
Winde remains concerned about gang activity, drug-related crimes and murder hotspots.
He says his government will continue to push for more policing resources.
“We need to have a deeper discussion around gang and drug crime, we also need to push alongside the national minister for the policing budget to be looked at, we need police to get their fair share of the budget just as we want education and health to get their fair share of the budget in our province. We also need to see an increased capacitation of investigators and investigation capabilities and support for the criminal justice system so that there are consequences for criminals in our province.”
