Wildfires around Nelson Mandela Bay under control

Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) Municipality in the Eastern Cape says fires have been brought under control in the metro.

This follows ravaging fires in different parts of the metro and other parts of the Eastern Cape, causing damage to property and leading to road closures.

Nelson Mandela Bay Acting Mayor Gary Van Niekerk says there are still some active fires and emergency services are monitoring the affected areas.

“We do have fires at the moment, they are in the Victoria drive area, the St Albans area and the Sherwood area as I mentioned. There are also some small fires springing up in our Nelson Mandela Bay area, but I’m urging residents to remain vigilant, and if you see any fires flaring up, if you see smoke, please contact our fire emergency number which is 041 585 1555.”

Meanwhile, parts of the province are being ravaged by fire.

In the Jeffrey’s Bay area, farmers and residents are fighting a blaze.

Winds are fanning the flames in the Kabeljou area. No firefighters are in sight.

Farm owner Jan-Hendrik Hattingh says they worked the entire night.

“We need to strategise again and just get everybody involved in a new plan of action. The wind changes direction all the time and resources are worn out, we worked all night and the guys are trying to get into shifts and support each other.”
