Western Cape Finance Minister to table Budget today

The Western Cape Minister of Finance, Deidré Baartman, is expected to table the 2025/26 Provincial Budget this morning.

The budget will be tabled amid significant fiscal constraints, as national finances remain limited.

The Provincial Government says its continued focus will be on driving economic growth and job creation, while at the same time safeguarding critical frontline services such as health, education and social services.

Baartman says there are funds in the National Budget that can be re-prioritised and instead, be used to improve services in provinces.

She says, “As the Western Cape Government we are opposed to the use of VAT (Value-Added Tax) as a funding source. We believe that we can use reprioritisation of national spending, We can cut wasteful expenditure and we can expedite market and economic reforms so that we are able to deal with education and health pressures that provinces are currently facing.” Reporting by Lyle Phillips and Corbin August.
