Police have fired rubber bullets at protesters in Westbury, near Johannesburg, demonstrating against water rationing.
Dozens of residents have braved the cold weather and barricaded the busy Fuel Road linking parts of Johannesburg with Soweto and Roodepoort.
They have used rocks and burning tyres to barricade the road and are only allowing Rahima Moossa Mother and Child Hospital medical personnel to pass through.
Residents have vowed to continue with their protest action until their demands are met. They say they have been without water for weeks.
This resident says the City of Johannesburg is undermining them, as the problem has been going on for eight years.
“We were striking about two weeks ago, and they said they are going to sort out the issue. Everything is going to be fine. But now it’s two weeks down the line and nothing has happened. They had it on for about a day, then they switched it off. Now, for this past week, there hasn’t been a drop of water. Who can live like this? Then there are these mafia trucks.”
Westbury residents vow to continue protesting. Residents say they still do not have water, and nothing has changed. They vow to protest until their needs are met.
