We’re re-looking at strategies to curb violence in W Cape: Masemola

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says they’re re-looking at strategies to deal with the ongoing taxi-violence and gang-related shooting incidents in the Western Cape.

Masemola was speaking on the second day of the 27th Interpol conference currently underway in Cape Town.

He says over 200 police officers from outside the Western Cape have been deployed in the province in the past month to help combat the increase in gang-violence.

Masemola says their main priority is to arrest all gang members, not just gang leaders.

“Resources we do have, what we have here we think we can tackle the gang-violence in the Western Cape. Of course, we are also going to tap into other government spheres to come on board and deal with other social matters, issues that are a problem and especially, issues of environmental design, accessibility in terms of policing and, of course, the kids that don’t go to school and become vulnerable and victims for gangs to recruit and use. So, that doesn’t require police. It needs other departments to take care of those kids. But in terms of fighting gangs and firearms and drugs, that’s our job,” says Masemola.
