The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level two weather alert for Saturday afternoon.
SAWS has warned of a 60% chance of rain across Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
Residents in low-lying areas are advised to take extra precautions due to potential localised flooding.
Forecaster Lehlohonolo Thobela says, “A yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms has been issued by the SAWS especially for the eastern parts of Gauteng into the southern parts of Limpopo as well as Mpumalanga and the western interior of KwaZulu-Natal, and not leaving out the Free State, where we can expect heavy downpours that might lead to localised flooding, a possibility of damaging winds as well as hail over these areas.”
According to the weather service, a yellow level two weather alert indicates potentially dangerous but unlikely-to-be-extreme weather that could cause minor disruptions to transport and society, such as localized flooding or damaging winds.
The “Yellow” colour signifies a low to moderate impact, while the “Level 2” denotes that the likelihood of a significant impact is low.
