Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Dada Morero, says the third and final phase of Rand Water’s planned maintenance programme is scheduled to take place from Tuesday to the 8th of January.
Morero says the upgrade will cause temporary water supply disruptions in some areas of Johannesburg.
He indicates that areas including the Roodepoort Deep Reservoir, Fleurhof Reservoir, Doornkop Reservoir, Meadowlands Reservoir and Braamfischerville Reservoir will be impacted.
“During maintenance, the volume of bulk water supply to Johannesburg water’s network will be significantly reduced and as a result, affected reservoirs will gradually deplete and residents may experience low water pressure or outages. After maintenance ends and pumping resumes on the 8th of January 2026, the system will not recover immediately. Joburg water’s infrastructure will require at least seven days to stabilise and recover fully.”

Warnings of contaminated tap water
Meanwhile, Johannesburg Water yesterday sounded an alarm warning residents in some parts of the city, including the CBD, not to drink their tap water after reports of a strong and unusual smell.
The utility has swiftly isolated the supply in affected streets, including Albertina Sisulu Road and 10th Street, while running laboratory tests to determine the source and extent of contamination.
Tankers have been deployed to provide water as officials urge caution, stressing that residents should avoid consumption until further notice.
