Warning to be vigilant when using credit cards

The editor of Mybroadband, Jan Vermeulen has cautioned credit cardholders to be wary of where they use their cards.

This follows complaints of fraudulent transactions processed by Facebook.

South Africans complain that fraudsters are draining their accounts using Facebook.

Vermeulen says Facebook is vulnerable to scammers because it does not request transaction authorisation on the bank app.

“It looks like a bunch of people’s credit card details were compromised in some way, was harvested somewhere or stolen or there was a data breach of some sort and a bunch of cyber criminals got their hands on these credit card details. They then use these critical details in Facebook to buy advertising credits so or something else in Facebook. But it’s probably advertising credits. It’s usually advertising credits because then what they do is they advertise scams and other criminal activity on Facebook using stolen money.”
