Warning for severe thunderstorms over KZN issued

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning that severe thunderstorms are expected over western KwaZulu-Natal, the Midlands and the north of the province on Monday.

It stretches from Kokstad in the south to Newcastle in the west, and to Pongola, and the Umkhanyakhude District in the north.

Cooperative Governance Department Spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, says more than 50 millimetres of rain are expected in these parts, which can lead to flooding, mudslides, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail.

Mzila says warnings have also been issued for the coast between Port Shepstone and Richards Bay, and adjacent areas for thunderstorms that are expected to be less severe.

“The MEC for Cogta Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi, is urging communities to exercise extreme caution as these inclement weather conditions pose a serious risk to human life. The province is expecting severe thunderstorms that could lead to flooding of susceptible roads, settlements and low-lying bridges and areas; excessive lightning, strong damaging winds, and large amounts of small hail and large hail in populated areas,” says Mzila.
