Warning against use of cell phones whilst driving

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) says it is working on a number of interventions to address road crashes caused by motorists taking videos for social media while driving.

The South African National Road Traffic Act prohibits the use of hand-held communication devices, including cell phones, while driving.

RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane says the new measures will include confiscating cell phones and imposing heavy fines.

“This has become massive for us because it leads to distraction, lack of attention while people are driving. And we see it also in the high number of hit and run incidents or vehicle overturning incidents, which while the drivers will not own up that they were distracted at the time that the crash happened. But an analysis leads us to believe that some of them are as a result of the use of cell phones,” adds Zwane.
