Walaza wins World University Games 100m crown

South African sprint sensation, 19-year-old Bayanda Walaza, has added the World University Games’ title to his World Athletics Under-20 crown and Olympic Games relay silver medal won in Paris last year.

He won the 100 metres in 10.16 seconds in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, beating Puripol Boonson of Thailand in the process.

Boonson also finished second at the under-20 world championships in Peru last year.

With his gold medal, Walaza joins Anaso Jobodwana and Akani Simbine as the only South African World University Games sprint champions.

Jobodwana won the title in 2013 and Simbine was victorious two years later.
