Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has also weighed in on the issue of devolving policing powers to the province. This, following his meeting with Acting Police Minister, Firoz Cachalia, this week.

The City of Cape Town and the provincial government want national government to devolve their investigative powers to improve the conviction rate in crime combating efforts. This is over and above a current memorandum of cooperation that was signed with national government a year ago for shared resources and joint operations.
Both the DA and the provincial government together with municipalities under the DA discussed crime fighting strategies in the wake of a surge in gang and gun violence.
“That forms part of the discussion we had with the minister yesterday and so we have agreed that it links to the plan we had initially agreed on,” says says Winde.
