The Department of Education in the Western Cape says there are more important indicators to consider for matric passes than the percentages achieved.

Results will be released at school on Tuesday.

Provincial Education Minister David Maynier says the indicators include the number of candidates achieving a bachelors pass and the reduction of underperforming schools.

He says it gives a better picture at improving learning outcomes.

“While the percentage pass rate is an important indicator when assessing the matric results, we must also consider other indicators, such as the number of candidates achieving a bachelors’ pass, the number of candidates writing and passing and reducing the number of underperforming schools.

We hope to our overall pass rate of 81.5 percent achieved in 2023 and our bachelor’s pass rate of 42,2 percent achieved, in both cases we hope to improve the number of candidates who achieved these results.”

Matric Results | SADAG urges 2024 class to take it easy

Meanwhile, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) says they are receiving about 2 000 calls a day, mainly from matriculants feeling anxious about their upcoming results.

Lebohang Mokoena, volunteer training coordinator at SADAG, says while they are receiving numerous calls from anxious learners, they are encouraged that those overwhelmed are reaching out for help

“We are receiving a lot of calls from students for feeling anxious, which is completely normal. We always say to them that it’s very good that you’re acknowledging how you’re feeling and having to have that courage to actually reach out for help.”

In terms of calls that we are receiving, a lot of students are reaching out for help, we’re trying to help them navigate those emotions that they’re feeling at that time, you know, to say that, listen, it’s okay. If you’re not okay, and help is there, just reach out and speak to someone about what you’re going through.”
