The Western Cape High Court sitting at Saldanha Bay is expected to continue with a video viewing of the so-called confession of accused number two, Steveno Van Rhyn in the Joshlin Smith kidnapping case. He and one of the other accused, Jacquen Appollis, allege they were tortured when their confession statements were taken by police.
Earlier, the doctor who examined Appollis and Van Rhyn before they gave their statements testified via video link.
Dr. Hendrick Nel told the court that Van Rhyn’s injuries could be consistent with those of someone who fell off a bakkie.
The two accused allege that police tortured them into giving their confessions in March last year. Appollis’ legal counsel, Fanie Harmse, cross-examined Dr. Nel.
“The one is soft, but what I am projecting to you is if you twist your ankle, if the bridge of your foot is tantamount to breaking your ankle, it is unlikely that it would occur when you twist your ankle,” explained Dr. Nel.
