Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala and three others appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court north of Johannesburg, July 11, 2025.
Attempted murder accused and businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala will know on Wednesday whether the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court will grant him bail.
Matlala allegedly attempted to murder his former partner, socialite Tebogo Thobejane.
Matlala’s name came under the spotlight in 2021 when whistleblower Babita Deokaran flagged his companies for possible fraudulent activity at the Tembisa Hospital.
Deokaran was later assassinated.
In July this year, KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of financially backing Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who has since been placed on special leave following the allegations.
The state is confident the businessman has a case to answer.
It argued that if Matlala is released, he may flee the country.
Matlala accused police of harassing him and planting evidence on his phone, including an Eswatini identity card.
The state says this proves he is a flight risk, pointing to his alleged ownership of a private jet, a boat, and a trust account in Mauritius.
