Alleged criminal cartel kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala gives evidence before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Facility in Pretoria on November 26, 2025.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) has confirmed that alleged cartel member and attempted murder-accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has been moved to a super maximum correctional centre in Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, DCS described the move as a standard operational practice.
Matlala was moved from Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Centre (C-MAX) to eBongweni Correctional Centre, which is a super maximum correctional centre, known as a state-of-the-art facility designed for dangerous offenders.
DCS Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo says, “What has to be emphasised is that transfer of remand detainees and sentenced offenders between correctional facilities is a standard operational practice which is informed by a range of considerations, primarily security, safety, operational requirements, and effective inmate management across the correctional system. It has to be stated as well that the transfer of an inmate does not prejudice their legal rights or access to services.”
