Vehicles burn as Table Mountain wildfire spreads in Tokai

Firefighters are still battling to contain a fire that is burning in the Silvermine Section of Table Mountain National Park, between Tokai and Noordhoek, in the Southern Peninsula.

Around 200 households, including dozens of frail care residents in Noordhoek, have been evacuated as a precautionary measure due to the fire.

The public has been urged to avoid the area.

The City of Cape Town Fire & Rescue Service says vehicles caught fire in the Silvermine parking lot amid the ongoing fire in the Upper Tokai in Table Mountain National Park, which has affected several areas.

Spokesperson Jamaine Carelse says residents of Barnyard and Silwersteen have decided to evacuate their households. Carelse says the Tokai fire area has been divided into five to maximise capacity and ‘surround’ the fire, taking into account the wind speed and direction.

“The situation is still fluid, and five choppers are still water bombing. More than 100 City Firefighters are on the scene, being assisted by TMNP, NCC, and VWS. Crews are monitoring Ou Kaapse Weg, Clovelly side, Tokai, and Boyes Drive. This fire is not contained and we urge the public to stay away from the areas in question. Please note that the earlier road closures are still in place. No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is still unknown. Donations in the form of water, energy drinks, and bars, as well as non-perishable items, may be dropped off at Lakeside Fire Station.”

Around 100 firefighters are currently on the scene battling the fire, which broke out in the Upper Tokai area on Friday and was largely contained until earlier today.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is undetermined at this stage, but authorities say they are monitoring the situation closely and will provide further updates later.
