Students at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) have shut down the campus, blocking vehicles coming in and out demanding accommodation.
Student Representative Council (SRC) President, Mcntosh Khasembe, says there are about 4 000 students that still need to be placed in residences.
They are holding all shuttles hostage, demanding that Vice Chancellor Professor Robert Balfour addresses them.
Meanwhile, last week, the university announced a major expansion of its student accommodation ahead of the 2026 academic year.
The institution says it has added more than 5 000 new bed spaces, bringing total residence capacity to just over 16 000 beds.
The move comes as South Africa continues to face a national student housing shortage, with demand for accommodation at public universities far exceeding supply.
