UWC expands student accommodation by 5 000 beds

The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has announced a major expansion of its student accommodation ahead of the 2026 academic year.

The institution says it has added more than 5 000 new bed spaces, bringing total residence capacity to just over 16 000 beds.

The move comes as South Africa continues to face a national student housing shortage, with demand for accommodation at public universities far exceeding supply.

Authorities say the expansion is aimed at improving student access, success and overall well-being.

The university says it will continue working with private partners to further increase housing options in the future.
