In January, the Trump administration announced a 90-day funding freeze on US foreign assistance, under the condition of reviewing and aligning global assistance with US interests.
Shortly after, the US ordered a “stop work order” directive, expanding the pause to include a freeze on all foreign aid programs, including PEPFAR.
The move threatened South Africa’s progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
Ntshavheni, briefing the media on the outcomes of Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday, 15 October 2025 , says that the cabinet welcomes the approval of PEPFAR bridge plan for South Africa.
“Cabinet welcomes the approval of the PEPFAR bridge plan for South Africa to the value of 115-million US dollars for the period of six months from the 1st of October 2025 to the 31st of March 2026. The PBP is meant to ensure uninterrupted HIV service delivery in SA by supporting HIV aids service continuity and prioritizing country specific needs and life-saving impact. Cabinet expressed its appreciation to the government of America on its commitment to supporting and sustaining progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS,” says Ntshaveni.
