President Cyril Ramaphosa meets with United States (US) President, Donald Trump for bilateral talks at the White House in Washington DC on May 22, 2025.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says his US counterpart Donald Trump, has agreed that the US should continue playing a key role in the G20, including attending the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg later this year.
This comes after Ramaphosa and a South African delegation met with Trump in Washington DC last week.
Ramaphosa has acknowledged, in his weekly letter to the nation, that while there was a need to correct false claims of a so-called white genocide, the overarching goal of the engagement was to deepen a strategic economic partnership with the US, which is the country’s second-largest trading partner.
The Presidency is pleased with the meeting, saying the meeting established a basis for greater engagement and cooperation.
Ramaphosa has further extended an invitation to President Trump to send a government and business delegation to SA to explore opportunities for deepening investment and trade.
Our successful working visit to the US reaffirmed the importance of keeping the channels of dialogue open. The willingness of the US to engage with South Africa on resetting our relationship is testament to the strength of the bilateral relationship.
