The Africa National Congress (ANC) in the Eastern Cape says an urgent intervention is needed to tackle teenage pregnancy in the province.
This follows public outrage after a 12-year-old girl gave birth at the Frontier Hospital in Komani on Wednesday.
The father of her baby is reported to be aged 17.

The ANC has called upon relevant stakeholders to intensify the fight against teenage pregnancy.
ANC provincial spokesperson Gift Ngqondi says, “Teenage pregnancy is an emotional matter that needs to be addressed by society at large, as it is broader and also a multifaceted problem that requires a comprehensive intervention.”
“We are calling for conversations regarding teen pregnancies and sexual education as they are important if we want to turn the tide and save our children, especially the girl children, as they tend to carry the consequences should they fall pregnant,” adds Ngqondi.
