Urgent application filed to halt over 2,000 teaching posts cut in WC

The Special Action Committee for Education says it has brought an urgent interdict application to the Western Cape High Court against the Department of Education in the province. This is an attempt to halt the department’s decision to cut more than 2,000 teaching posts.

The department had cited that budget cuts at national level have led to the decision to cut jobs.

Head of the Education and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (EUSA) in the Western Cape and Member of the Special Action Committee (SAC), Andre de Bruyn says the Western Cape Education MEC, David Maynier should have found alternatives to job cuts similar to the other eight provinces.

“We had to bring an urgent application with the High Court to oppose the Western Cape Education Department’s decision to cut 2,407 teaching posts. Contracts expire tomorrow, on the 31st. Despite more than R400 million to staff salaries, the MEC persists in what we call a reckless decision to cut 2,407 teaching posts and the other eight provinces refused to touch their teachers. So, we need to look after our children and their futures as well as look after our colleagues who are sitting in trauma at this moment,” says Maynier.
