Five cash-in-transit robbery suspects have been shot and killed during a shootout with the police in Crown Mines, Johannesburg. Firearms have been recovered.
Gauteng Police Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says this was a crime intelligence-led operation by KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng police.
Lt-General Mthombeni says the suspects were heavily armed and are linked to other CIT robberies.
Mthombeni explains that the vehicle they were using matched one used in previous crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.
“Based on the vehicle they are driving, this vehicle has been linked with the previous crime scene. As I have indicated in KwaZulu-Natal on the 14th, there was an attempted murder and cash-in-transit heist, and this vehicle is the same that was seen on the other crime scene.”
