Police have now confirmed that two Rea Vaya bus drivers were shot dead in separate incidents in Soweto last night.
In the first incident, a driver was fatally shot at a traffic light along Wild Chestnut Street in Protea.
In the second incident, another driver was shot dead in Mapetla.
Gauteng Police Spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says no arrests have been made yet.
“On the second incident at Tshithuthune Street, the eyewitness reported that he was the last passenger on the bus when he heard gunshots and took cover. After it got quiet, he realised that the driver was shot, he tried to drive the bus but crashed into a wall. The driver was declared dead on the scene and the passenger sustained no injuries. In both incidents, the motive is unknown at this stage and police investigations continue.”
The bus company has temporarily suspended its services until further notice.
