UPDATE: Police probe intimidation, assault claims at Mpumalanga mine

Police are investigating several cases of intimidation and assault against security guards employed by a mining company accused of harassing residents of Mankele Village near Sudwala in Mpumalanga.

The company, identified as Maruru, is also accused by local land claim beneficiaries of forcefully evicting another mining firm that had leased a gold mining plant from them. 

Provincial police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane confirmed that five cases have been opened so far. 

“Cases that we know of are assaults and intimidation and some involve pointing with a firearm. Five cases are opened. Investigation is still ongoing,” said Ndubane.
