The death toll in the fatal bus crash on the N-2 at Mandeni in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to eight. One of the deceased is a four-year-old child.
The bus is believed to have plummeted down a steep embankment after a tyre burst Sunday afternoon.
The Department of Transport in KwaZulu-Natal says the bus crash was caused by a tyre burst.
The department confirms that the passengers were churchgoers traveling from Richards Bay to Shaka’s Kraal at the time of the accident.
It’s believed the driver then lost control of the vehicle before it crashed down an embankment.
Rescuers at the scene say 80 passengers were injured, some in serious condition. Emergency services are still busy retrieving some of the trapped passengers in the bus three hours after the crash.
