Unknown witness set to appear in the Senzo Meyiwa trial on Monday

The defence is expected to call a witness in the Senzo Meyiwa trial when it resumes in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday morning. However, it is not clear who the witness is.

Five men are on trial for killing the former Bafana Bafana captain in October 2014.

In the last appearance earlier this month, the court ruled that the state had valid evidence to which one of the accused Mthokoziseni Maphisa must answer.

Judge Ratha Mokgoathleng dismissed the section 174 application by Maphisa to have the charge against him dismissed.

Maphisa forged ahead with the application despite four of his co-accused abandoning the process.

His defence counsel, Zithulele Nxumalo attempted to discredit the evidence of Constable Sizwe Zungu the only witness who testified about seeing all five accused at a hostel in Vosloorus, the day of the murder.

Judge Mokgoatlheng said Zungu’s evidence, which included a picture where he is seen with all the accused, has some merit and that the totality of the evidence is interlinked.

The defence is expected to indicate which witnesses will be called when the trial resumes this morning.
