Universities warn of rising degree fraud linked to public figures

There is growing concern among universities over allegations that politicians and government officials are fraudulently acquiring degrees.

Some experts have attributed this to the poor funding of institutions of higher learning, which they say is a recipe for corruption.

Independent Educational expert, Khumbulani Mngadi, says, “It would appear that politicians have infiltrated and captured the independence of universities instead of universities functioning independently. Universities, as per norm, should be independent but operate as public institutions. In the past, universities had their own funds from private funders, but what is happening now is that the government has funded universities enormously over the years, such that it has become difficult for Vice-Chancellors, the council and other entities within institutions of higher learning to be in opposition with politicians who run the government.”
