UNISA defends VC amid Save Unisa abuse of power claims

The University of  South Africa (UNISA) has defended the performance of its Vice Chancellor, Professor Puleng LenkaBula in the wake of allegations of maladministration and abuse of power by a forum called Save Unisa.

LenkaBula is preparing to begin her second five-year term in January 2026.

Save Unisa has claimed LenkaBbula has been purging staff and abusing public funds.

Independent assessor, Professor Themba Mosia, and the Unisa Ministerial task team, chaired by Vincent Maphai, made damning findings two years ago about governance at UNISA.

UNISA Spokesperson, Boitumelo Senokoane however, says LenkaBula has done a sterling job since her appointment in late 2020.

“The principal and vice-chancellor stated in 2021, there’s been unqualified audits since then consistently so, amidst the allegations that were never proven of corruption. We’ve increased our reserves to R22 billion. We have our investments increased to R12 billion. Our performance in terms of the world university rankings has improved. I said she arrived we were at 12. We are now sitting comfortably in different world ranking systems of universities between seven and six. We’ve got close to 60,000 students graduating annually. What more do you ask?”
