Nurses’ union Hospersa says they want to challenge the policy for clinics to open for 24-hours after two nurses were raped and security officers attacked at the Ga-Chuene clinic outside Polokwane in Limpopo.
The nurses, who were on night shift, were taking by an assailant to a nearby bush and raped. The attacker also stole items belonging to the nurses and the security guards.
Hospersa spokesperson Thulani Maluleke says management must put night operations at the clinic on hold.
“We are very much disappointed with the security measures that are at this place. If you can go deep, you will find that security measures are not in proper place but yet the department allowed the 24 service to continue. We want to go to the Labour Court to challenge the inception of 24-hour services. We have been saying to management, we need to put the issue on hold due to these safety issues, we are not surprised to see this happen today.”
