Union Against Hunger launches campaign to eradicate food insecurity

The newly-formed Union Against Hunger, comprising various food security advocacy groups, has announced its campaign to combat food insecurity in South Africa.

This follows alarming statistics revealing that one in four South Africans experiences severe food insecurity, and nine million children suffer from hunger daily.

Alan Browde, part of the union’s secretariat, expressed deep concern over the situation.

“The statistics are catastrophic. When you have 15 to 20 million people severely food vulnerable, it’s a crime against our people. Nearly 30% of children under five are stunted, with lasting cognitive impairments that limit their future participation in the economy,” he said.

The union emphasizes that the situation poses an existential threat to the nation.
