Unemployed women in Diepkloof struggling to find permanent work

Unemployed women in Diepkloof, Soweto, say they continue to feel the pinch of unemployment and are losing all hope that they will one day be economically active.

This as women continue to be the least employed when compared to their male counterparts.

The first quarter labour force survey reveals that the expanded unemployment rate for women remains at 47%, while 39% of men are jobless.

Two unemployed women say the lack of income has left them worrying daily about how they will feed their families.

“It’s hard to survive and it’s painful. Right now, the children are at school and when they come home, they will want bread and there won’t be any. I spend the whole day trying to get a loaf of bread for my kids. I have been job hunting for a long time. When I get odd jobs, they don’t last. When I send my CV, they tell me I don’t qualify and have no experience. Of course, I didn’t go to university, but I am able to do handy work,” says the women.
