Walter Sisulu University (WSU) Council Chairperson, Thembeka Ngcukaitobi, has criticised what he calls an unequal funding model, that keeps historically black universities at a permanent disadvantage, compared to their historically white counterparts.
Advocate Ngcukaitobi says chronic underfunding is at the heart of WSU’s financial crisis.
He warned that without structural reform, institutions like WSU will continue to collapse.
The institution briefed the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education on Wednesday on its state of governance, administration as well as teaching and learning.
“That concern about financial sustainability is a historical concern. It comes as a result, primarily of, the funding formula. The funding formula in this country continues to discriminate against black institutions. That is why we have asked in all our encounters, the continuing discrimination against black institutions, through the funding model,” says Ngcukaitobi.
