The United Nations Security Council has condemned the assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on El Fasher in North Darfur, amid reports of widespread atrocity crimes and the targeting and killing of civilians.
The Council, in a statement, condemned reported atrocities being perpetrated by the RSF including summary executions, arbitrary detentions and sexual violence.
The US in January accused the RSF of genocide.
Council members recalled a resolution passed last year demanding the RSF lift its siege of El-Fasher, for an immediate halt to fighting and for de-escalation in the region amid famine and extreme food insecurity – a binding resolution that has simply been ignored.
Security Council members called on all parties to the conflict in Sudan to allow and facilitate safe and unhindered humanitarian access in a manner consistent with international law.
They called for the protection of civilians and for safe passage for those trying to flee the city and reiterated that the priority was for the parties to resume talks to reach a lasting ceasefire and a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned political process.
