Umzinto suspect believed to have committed suicide, families grieve

Families of five victims, who were stabbed to death allegedly by a 39-year-old man at Malangeni Phase 2 in Umzinto on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast, are angry and devastated.

It is alleged that Lungisani Shabane, who is now believed to have taken his own life, stabbed his girlfriend, Nokwanda Mbili, multiple times in the presence of their 11-year-old child.

The incident happened on Saturday night at the victim’s home following an altercation.

Shabane then fled the scene and went on a stabbing spree, killing four men.

Mbili’s niece, Thalente Khumalo, says they have lost a sole breadwinner.

“He pulled out a knife and stabbed her. I could hear the screams, but didn’t think it’s here at home. Then Thando rushed to try and open the door, but it was locked. My aunt then screamed and asked us to call the people Shabane was drinking with. When I eventually went into the house, I found my aunt lying on the floor in a pool of blood.”

The mayor of Umdoni Local Municipality Mbali Cele-Luthuli visited the bereaved families.

In a statement released by the municipality, Cele urged communities to play their part in eradicating the scourge.

The brutal killing of Ms Mbili is a heartbreaking reminder of the violence that continues to plague our communities. It is devastating that, during a period when we call for unity and action against gender-based violence, a mother of four loses her life at the hands of someone she trusted. We condemn this act in the strongest possible terms. As a municipality, we stand with the families in their grief, and we reaffirm our commitment to strengthening support systems and ensuring that no woman should ever live in fear.
