The uMngeni Municipality has expressed outrage following the murder of the KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson of the African Farmers Association of South Africa (AFASA) Mbongeni Sikhakhane.
He was shot and killed in Sweetwaters in Pietermaritzburg.
In a statement, the municipality says his death is a huge blow for the agricultural sector as Sikhakhane was regarded as a champion of rural development in the province.
He has been described as a pillar of the farming community.
The municipality has further called on law enforcement to ensure that those behind the murder are brought to justice.
