Police at Mahikeng in the North West have arrested two suspects believed to be linked to the theft of elephant tusks. The Department of Tourism says the arrests follow a tip-off and swift police action.
The initial group is believed to have consisted of four suspects.
However, two managed to flee and are still at large.
Authorities are continuing the search for the remaining individuals.
Tourism Department Spokesperson Jeremiah Matebesi says two suspects have been arrested.
”We received information that two suspects have been arrested for elephant poaching and indeed when we arrived here in the crossing, we found that there were three elephant horns, which have been recovered from the suspects by the police. As the department, we want to applaud the South African police, as well as some of our employees at economic development, environment consecration and tourism who have played a pivotal role,” says Matebesi.
