Two suspects arrested on charges of extortion in Gugulethu

Two suspects have been arrested on charges of extortion at the Siqalo informal settlement, in Gugulethu, Cape Flats.

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi says disgruntled business owners in the area, informed members of Gugulethu SAPS that they are in possession of letters demanding a protection fee.

Swartbooi says police members met with business leaders and planned their approach to bring an end to extortion.

“They deployed the members strategically around identified business premises, waiting on the arrival of the persons of interest.

Their patience was rewarded when two males aged 19 and 25 entered the premises.

The police members then apprehended the two males for extortion. Once charged, they are expected to make a court appearance in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on the mentioned charge.”
