The North West Education Department says it has deployed armed security personnel to the Meriti Secondary School in Meriting near Rustenburg after two learners were stabbed.
The department says a gang of four former learners attacked one of the learners.
When the learner ran towards the school for protection, the group followed and stabbed a second learner.
Both learners have been taken to hospital.
They will be allowed to complete their examinations after recovery.
Department Spokesperson Mphata Molokwane says, “The North West Department of Education expresses grave concern over two violent incidents that occurred at Meriti Secondary School in Meriting near Rustenburg. A Grade nine learner was stabbed by a group of four former learners outside school leading to another stabbing of a Grade 10 learner within the school grounds. The violence is linked to tribalism and gangsterism. MEC Viola Motsumi responded by deploying four armed security personnel to patrol the school and address ongoing gang-related issues.”
