The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) in KwaZulu-Natal says two minors between the ages of three and 13 were among the five people killed in a head-on collision near Bergville on Sunday morning.
RTI Spokesperson Sindi Msimang says three other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital.
The provincial Department of Transport says one of the vehicles caught fire and was completely engulfed in flames.
Officials at the department are in contact with the families of the victims.
The RTI has extended its condolences to the bereaved families.
Transport MEC, Siboniso Duma, is awaiting a full report on the crash from the Road Traffic Inspectorate.
KZN Transport department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya says, βHe has dispatched a team from his office and the department to work with the families during this difficult period. He is awaiting a report from the highly efficient and dedicated team of the road traffic inspectorate so that he has a sense of what could have been the cause of this horrific accident.β
