Two Mamelodi children die after allegedly eating food from spaza shop

Two children aged seven and 10 years old are believed to have died yesterday after allegedly consuming snacks purchased from a local spaza shop in Mamelodi, east of Pretoria.

This is according to a parent of one of the deceased children.

It’s believed that three children became ill hours after consuming the snacks and were rushed to the Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

One child died in the early hours of yesterday morning while the other passed away last night.

The surviving child remains in the intensive care unit in a critical condition.

The Department of Health has indicated to SABC News that they cannot comment on the matter until they receive a full post mortem report.

Meanwhile, calls our mounting for the closure of foreign and illegally operated spaza shops.

This as the country continues to count more deaths linked to consumption of alleged poisoned or contaminated food bought from local spaza shops.
