Two killed in head-on collision on N2 in Eastern Cape

Two people have died on the N2 between East London and Qonce in the Eastern Cape when two motor vehicles collided head-on.

Both individuals were declared dead on the scene, while another occupant sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Provincial Transport Department spokesperson Unathi Binqose says a case of culpable homicide has been opened.

“We are deeply concerned by this tragic crash that has claimed the two lives in the early hours of New Year’s Day, especially coming at the back of the worst crash we have recorded since the beginning of the festive season, where nine people died at Engcobo just hours before the end of 2025. We are now waking up to yet another tragic accident on the N2 between East London and Qonce and one person in that crash is fighting for their life in hospital.”

“We continue to urge road users to slow down and obey the rules of the road at all times,” added Binqose.
