Two suspected cash-in-transit suspects have been fatally wounded in a shootout with police at Wasbank near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal.

Officers were following up information about the whereabouts of the two suspects who were allegedly involved in at least six cash-in-transit robberies at KwaDukuza, Verulam, Phoenix, Greytown, Nyomi and Langlaagte between 2022 and March this year.

Provincial Police Spokesperson, Colonel Robert Netshiunda, says the suspects opened fire on police officers when they arrived at the house where they were hiding.

“Police identified the house in which the suspects were hiding, and when they arrived and introduced themselves, the suspects fired shots towards police officers and a shootout ensued. The two suspects were shot and fatally during the shootout. One of the suspects, aged 43 years old, had a warrant of arrest against him for being in possession of explosives and ammunition,” explains Netshiunda.

Police confiscated two firearms from the suspects and no police officers were hurt during the shootout.
