The opening session of the Urban20SouthAfrica.
City of Tshwane Executive Mayor, Dr Nasiphi Moya, has bemoaned what she calls municipalities’ lack of capacity that’s necessary to satisfy the needs of their residents. She made the remarks during the official opening of the three-day Urban 20 Mayoral Summit in Sandton, north of Johannesburg.
The summit brought together local government leaders from the G20 cities across South Africa and the continent, among others. They’re deliberating on measures to shape the global priorities for cities and improve the lives of citizens and the economies of local government institutions.
Moya has called on potential investors to come on board to invest in infrastructure development to upscale service delivery.
“Our focus is to build infrastructure that our people need to live with dignity, to travel safely and to grow our local economies. Too often municipalities have the will and the vision, but lack financial resources to drive those ambitions. We cannot continue to limit our focus. That is why we are working on finding new innovative ways to (bring) investors to the table to invest in our cities. This is not an investment for investment’s sake, but cultivating resources to direct infrastructure development that benefits our communities,” says Moya.
